PITTSBURGH, PA - The 2007 Tony Coelho Award was presented to Mark Boxer, President and CEO of WellPoint's Operations, Technology and Government Services Business Unit. The award ceremony was held Monday, October 1, 2007 during a breakfast at the Westin Indianapolis Hotel.
The award was named after the Honorable Tony Coelho, author of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush. This award is presented annually to a CEO, President, or government leader who has demonstrated a significant commitment to employ people with disabilities in competitive positions, and worked to influence other business and/or government leaders. Bender Consulting Services, Inc., sponsors this award to honor the work of Tony Coelho, a true civil rights leader for people with disabilities.
"Mark Boxer is an unbelievable man who has not only led the charge for the competitive employment of Americans with disabilities, but has influenced other CEOs to do the same." said Joyce Bender.
Mr. Boxer is responsible for overseeing National Government Services (the nation's largest Medicare claims processing business), the Federal Employee Program as well as the enterprise-wide service functions of information technology, eCommerce and customer operations. He had previously served in various leadership roles at the company, including Executive Vice-President and Chief Information Officer, President and CEO of Consumer-Driven Health Plans, and as the company's chief strategy and business development officer.
"When you think of a singular great leader who truly championed the rights of people with disabilities - you think of The Honorable Tony Coelho, who authored the most widely recognized piece of civil rights legislation in the last 20 years," said Boxer. "To be recognized with an award that bears his name means that WellPoint is having real success in creating a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve and is responsive to their health care needs."
WellPoint is the nation's largest health plan, serving approximately 34 million medical members, and was formed in 2004 by the merger between Anthem, Inc. and WellPoint Health Networks. Mr. Boxer joined Anthem in 2000 as senior vice president of eBusiness.
