PITTSBURGH, PA- Joyce A. Bender will be the recipient of United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Pittsburgh's Gertude Labowitz Lifetime Achievement Award, at the 13th Annual Community Heroes Awards Dinner, at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh on October 5, 2005. The Gertrude Labowitz Lifetime Achievement Award is given each year to an individual or organization in recognition of their outstanding record of enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities. The award was founded in 1987 in honor of UCP Board Charter Member Gertrude Labowitz and her lifelong commitment to human services.

Joyce is being recognized for her unwavering commitment to furthering the employment of people with disabilities. She is President and CEO of Bender Consulting Services, Inc. and its "sister company" Bender Consulting Services of Canada, Inc. Bender Consulting provides competitive employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the areas of information technology, engineering, finance/accounting, human resources and general business.

In 1985, Joyce had a life-threatening accident due to epilepsy, which caused an intracranial hemorrhage that required subsequent brain surgery. Against all odds, Joyce recovered from the accident that left her with a 60 percent hearing loss in one ear and a realization that she had epilepsy. As a result of her personal experience, she developed a passion for helping people with disabilities and founded both companies.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Bender Consulting Services, Inc. Since its inception, Joyce Bender has provided competitive employment to 193 employees in the areas of information technology, finance/accounting, and human resources.

In addition to this prestigious honor, Joyce is the recipient of the 2003 New Freedom Initiative Award from the Bush Administration, as well as the 1999 President's Award from President Clinton. She is the host of a radio show, "Disability Matters with Joyce Bender" that airs weekly on www.voiceamerica.com every Tuesday from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM eastern time.
