Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION: Apply technical knowledge, original thinking, and ingenuity to solve complex engineering design problems and develop new products. Coordinate multiple time-driven projects at one time, some of which last for multiple years, while maintaining scope, schedule and cost commitments. Plan, lead, and report on projects while utilizing mechanical engineering, CAD, and material science expertise along with best practice methodology to deliver robust product designs and make sound engineering decisions. Be comfortable working in a team environment and collaborating cross functionally with all roles and levels of the business, including direct interface with customers and vendors.
o Develop a wide variety of innovative compressors/vacuum pump products that meet customer expectations, quality and financial requirements, and industry and government compliance standards. Apply design for safety, manufacturability and other best practices.
o Lead ideation sessions to create innovations that solve market needs. Provide engineering service to strategic OEM and distributor customers. Develop strong relationship with and serve as a technical resource on conference calls and customer visits with sales and marketing. Some overseas travel to customers or vendors may be required. (less than 25% travel)
o Develop product prototypes and models for design validation, aesthetics, performance and usability reviews. Comfortable with machining tools, rapid prototype assembly and hands on field testing. Lead the construction and evaluation of prototype mock-ups of products.
o Create 3D CAD models and assemblies using SolidWorks and direct the work of designers doing project work. Employ FEA design simulation and tolerance stack up analysis to optimize designs. Create part and product specifications for tooling and manufacturing control. Develop detailed CAD drawings with appropriate control dimensions and parameters.
o Manage multiple product development projects using a toll-gate process with a focus on defining the timeline and key milestones. Ensure deliverables are executed on time, to cost and to quality specification.
o Create test plans in cooperation with our lab and/or outside labs that confirm the design goals. Collaborate with operations to establish qualification and QC manufacturing criteria. Be familiar with and able to apply appropriate regulatory agency requirements, such as UL, CE, CSA, NSF, etc. to designs.
o Assess and optimize existing products for application, field performance, or manufacturing improvements, and develop line extensions.
o Evaluate patent, legal, and regulatory requirements for projects; initiate patent process for new developments and review prior art to protect against infringements. Monitor and benchmark competitive products and identify design alternatives.
o Work directly with outside vendors or through internal strategic sourcing personnel for part sourcing, engineering support, material development, etc. Prepare cost and profitability analyses to support capital procurement and business Go/No-Go decisions.
o Oversee/generate comprehensive DFMEA documents, Engineering Product Specifications, Quality and Audit Plans and Engineering drawings. Draft, review and approve ECN spec changes.
o Gather pertinent data and coordinate response (product testing, etc.) – recommend design improvements, as required, to prevent reoccurrence of problems. Conduct field investigations, failure recreation studies and field trials.
o Manage and coordinate benchmarking test activities vs. competitive products.
o Analyzes CIP requests for feasibility and determines most effective and timely method for completion. Acts as project manager in resolving open issues, tracking open items and closing out open CIPs within prescribe timeframe. Responsible for final decision on requests effecting product form, fit, or functions. Directs efforts of Designers, Model Shop and Lab Techs as required.
o Initiate prototype Bill of Materials, parts orders, shop orders, and lab testing orders for customer prototypes. Review and approve prototype for shipment to customer. Complete model setups of new products. Follow established standard work and process for above.

Engineering discipline experience with a focus on mechanical, pneumatic, and/or fluid power systems.

Persons occupying this position will be expected to sign an Employee Inventions and Proprietary Information agreement.
o Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or another related field.
o At least 3 years of demonstrated professional experience and project management working with technical manufactured industrial use products. Pneumatic and/or fluid power systems experience preferred.
o Basic understanding of metals and material properties. Basic understanding of motors, electronics, and regulatory/certification process associated with such products (UL/CE).
o Demonstrated competency in computer design, 3-D modeling, and FEA experience. Solidworks preferred.
o Demonstrated experience with FMEA.
o Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft software and other project management tools
