Job Description
The Senior Mainframe Technical Engineer provides technical leadership for the design, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of critical enterprise mainframe systems. This role requires strong expertise in IBM z/OS, DB2, IMS, CICS, MQ, and related technologies, with responsibility for troubleshooting complex issues, supporting high availability and performance, and leading technical initiatives.
The Senior Technical Engineer collaborates across IT teams, supports disaster recovery and automation efforts, mentors technical staff, and promotes effective standards and practices across a geographically distributed mainframe environment.
U.S. Citizenship Required due to contractual and system access requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Mainframe Engineering & Support
• Design, implement, test, maintain, and support enterprise IBM z/OS mainframe solutions.
• Provide technical expertise across DB2, IMS, CICS, MQ, and related mainframe technologies.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues and perform root-cause analysis to maintain system availability and performance.
• Support system monitoring, maintenance, upgrades, and infrastructure improvements.
• Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and 24x7x365 on-call support.
Technical Leadership & Projects
• Lead complex technical initiatives from analysis and design through implementation and production support.
• Collaborate with architecture, infrastructure, application, and business teams to develop solutions aligned with enterprise standards.
• Evaluate new technologies and identify opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, automation, and efficiency.
• Monitor project progress, identify risks or technical issues, and communicate status and recommendations to leadership.
• Document technical solutions, processes, and procedures and participate in technical reviews and knowledge sharing.
Collaboration & Mentoring
• Mentor associate and intermediate technical engineers and support the development of their technical skills.
• Work with vendors to troubleshoot and resolve software and systems issues.
• Communicate technical information and recommendations effectively with technical teams, leadership, and business stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or related field; equivalent education and experience may be considered.
• 10 years of experience working with IBM z/Series mainframe environments.
• Strong experience with z/OS systems programming, including SMP/E.
• Experience with DB2, IMS, and CICS.
• Experience designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and supporting large-scale technical solutions.
• Strong technical problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
• Experience leading technical projects or initiatives.
• Experience working in highly available production environments.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to participate in scheduled off-hours, weekend, and 24x7x365 on-call support.
Preferred
• Experience with IBM Systems Automation and mainframe automation technologies.
• Experience with mainframe diagnostic and performance tools.
• Experience with MQ.
• Experience supporting disaster recovery and business continuity environments.
• Experience working with third-party vendors to resolve technical issues.
