Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic leader to serve as Director of Data Platform. This individual will bring deep technical expertise in data engineering, distributed systems, and cloud-native architecture, ideally within the healthcare domain. This role is responsible for defining and executing the enterprise data platform strategy, ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performing data solutions that enable analytics, interoperability, and data-driven decision making across the organization. This position is onsite, 3 days per week in Pittsburgh, PA.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Define and own the long-term data platform strategy, including architecture, tooling, and roadmap aligned to business and clinical priorities
• Lead the design, development, and operation of scalable, secure, and reliable data platforms and pipelines (ETL/ELT)
• Drive architectural decisions across data ingestion, storage, processing, interoperability, and analytics layers
• Build and scale cloud-native data platforms leveraging GCP (preferred), AWS, and/or Azure
• Oversee implementation of modern data engineering practices including Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and DataOps
• Establish and enforce data quality, metadata management, lineage, and governance standards
• Ensure high availability, performance, scalability, and cost optimization of data systems
• Partner with security and governance teams to ensure compliance with HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and other regulatory requirements
• Collaborate with data science, analytics, product, clinical, and IT teams to deliver trusted, actionable data solutions
• Act as a technical advisor to senior leadership, translating complex technical concepts into clear business value
• Lead, mentor, and scale high-performing data engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement
QUALIFICATIONS
• 10 years of experience in data engineering, data platform, or related fields, with progressive leadership responsibility
• Strong expertise in cloud platforms, with preference for GCP; experience with AWS and/or Azure also valued
• Deep experience with modern data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Flink, Kafka, Airflow)
• Proficiency with data storage and query technologies (e.g., BigQuery, Presto/Trino, Iceberg, data lakes, and data warehouses)
• Experience with analytics engineering tools such as dbt and semantic data modeling
• Proven track record of designing and managing large-scale, distributed data platforms
• Strong understanding of data governance, data quality, and platform reliability principles
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience working with healthcare data, including clinical, claims, and operational datasets
• Deep understanding of interoperability standards such as FHIR and HL7, and related APIs
• Hands-on experience managing Protected Health Information (PHI) and building HIPAA-compliant platforms
• Familiarity with healthcare analytics use cases and regulatory considerations
• Demonstrated success leading and scaling engineering teams in complex enterprise environments
• Ability to define technical vision, set clear goals, and drive execution across cross-functional teams
• Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to align business and technical priorities
• Passion for building high-quality, resilient systems that enable innovation and improve outcomes
